Rules for Mushroom and Berry Picking

The Carpathian forests are famous for their variety of mushrooms and berries that can be a great addition to dishes or winter provisions. However, before going for a gathering, it's important to familiarize yourself with the main rules and recommendations:

  • Always collect only those mushrooms and berries of which you are 100% sure about their edibility.
  • Carry a mushroom knife and a basket made of natural materials to ensure proper ventilation of the collected harvest.
  • Do not pick mushrooms near roads and industrial sites, as they can accumulate harmful substances.

Main Types of Mushrooms

Porcini mushrooms, birch boletes, slippery jacks and bay boletes are some of the most popular and delicious mushrooms in the Carpathians. The forests also contain russulas, honey fungus and milk caps. Before gathering, it is worth learning their appearance and characteristics.

Mushroom Picking Season

The mushroom season in the Carpathians lasts from July to October, but the largest harvest is often at the end of August - beginning of September.

Berry Calendar

Picking berries in the Carpathians is also a popular activity. Depending on the season, you can find:

  • June-July: blueberries and raspberries
  • August: cowberries and cranberries
  • Autumn: rowanberries and rosehips

Preserve Nature

During mushroom and berry picking, it's important to remember about preserving nature. Do not leave trash in the forest, do not destroy gathering sites, and do not take more than you need.

Safety

Do not forget about your own safety: inform someone about your whereabouts, take a mobile phone with a charged battery and water. It is also recommended to have a compass or GPS navigator with you.
