Overview of the Flora of the Carpathians

The Carpathian Mountains in Ukraine are a true paradise for botanists and nature lovers, as the flora of the region includes about 2,000 species of higher plants, nearly 30 of which are endemic, meaning they only grow here.

  • Forests: Dominated by beech and fir forests, there are also oak groves and pine plantations.
  • Alpine meadows: In the higher parts of the mountains, there are flowering meadows where you can see rare species of orchids and rhododendrons.
  • Rare plants: Unique species such as the Carpathian bellflower, mountain peony, and many others can be found.

Fauna of the Carpathians

The animal world of the Carpathians is also amazingly diverse and includes numerous species, from insects to large predators.

  • Predators: Brown bears, wolves, lynxes are the main predators inhabiting the Carpathians.
  • Ungulates: Bison, deer, roe deer, and other species of ungulates can be found in the forest masses.
  • Birds: A rich world of birds is represented by Red Book species such as eagles, falcons, woodpeckers, and others.
  • River ecosystems: Newts, water frogs, a variety of fish species, and crayfish inhabit the waters of the Carpathians.

Ecotourism and Scientific Research

The Carpathians offer excellent opportunities for ecotourism, naturalistic tourism, and scientific research, with a focus on preserving valuable natural resources.

Protection and Conservation

For the preservation of the biodiversity of the Carpathians, numerous reserves, national natural parks, and biosphere reserves operate, such as the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve.
